A close talk with: Ruxx (drummer)

We are excited to share an exclusive interview with Ruxx, the drummer of CYGNUS, our favorite Viking metal band. We had the opportunity to sit down with him and delve into his musical influences, the band's composition process, his favorite songs to play live, and much more.

During the interview, Ruxx spoke to us about his main musical influences and how they have shaped his unique drumming style. He also discussed the challenges the band currently faces and their ambitious long-term goals. Ruxx shared special memories from live performances and provided insight into the creative evolution of CYGNUS's music.

What are your main musical influences and how have they impacted your playing style?

R: Progressive rock opened my mind to a broader and richer musical landscape. It significantly developed my musical understanding.

Is there a particular drummer or band that has been a great inspiration for you?

R: Mike Portnoy, Nicko McBrain, Thomas Pridgen, Alex Gonzalez. Bands like Maná, Dream Theater, Iron Maiden, Manowar, among others.

How do you integrate these influences into the unique style of Viking metal in the band?

R: I believe I've created a sound that blends these diverse influences, enriching each artistic facet.

What is your favorite song to play live and why?

R: "Valhalla" is incredibly exciting to play. I have many favorites, especially the more folk-inspired ones and instrumental tracks.

Is there a song in the band's repertoire that stands out to you due to its complexity, emotion, or audience response?

R: There are several. Each song has its own beauty and complexity, which I find deeply engaging.

Any special memories from a live performance that stand out in your memory?

R: When our friend Cole used to get on stage drunk and recite nonsense—it was hilarious and the crowd loved it.

How would you describe the band's composition process and your role in it?

R: It varies a lot. Ideas can start anywhere, from jamming on guitar to sudden inspirations during everyday life. Deneb and I often share and discuss ideas.

Do you have a particular approach or routine when composing music?

R: Not really. Ideas come as thoughts, and we shape them or find the best path for each song.

Three words:

  • Deneb: Music, Tolkien, CYGNUS.

  • Jota: Fun, intelligence, good friend.

  • Andrés: Guitar, beer, show.

  • CYGNUS: Perseverance, discipline, art.

What challenges is the band currently facing and how are you addressing them?

R: The biggest challenge is being in a tropical country where our music isn't widely appreciated. We're striving to break out internationally.

Are there technical, creative, or logistical aspects posing challenges in music and video production?

R: Absolutely. Finding Nordic landscapes for our videos in Colombia is tough. Also, we love elaborate live shows with custom lighting and pyrotechnics, which adds complexity.

How does the band stay innovative and evolve musically over time?

R: Deneb and I have great musical chemistry, which fuels our continuous creation of music.

What is your long-term vision for the band and where would you like to see it evolve in the coming years?

R: We envision CYGNUS as a prominent band based in a Nordic country, performing at major metal festivals like Wacken Open Air.

Does the band have any specific artistic or professional goals it's pursuing?

R: We're committed to constant improvement and growth every day.

How do you envision the band's music influencing its fans and the music scene overall?

R: Our music has touched many lives, providing strength and inspiration to overcome challenges. It's about empowering people to face life head-on.
